I join with the majority of reasonable and safe BC drivers in demanding a resumption of rural highway, and the initiation of urban highway, speed limit reviews. The goal should be to recognize and prioritize the safe and efficient travel of the vast majority of highway users - motorized vehicle drivers.

Our roads serve the transportation needs of countless commuters - by bus or otherwise, move goods, and provide for economic activity and a robust economy.

I urge you to set speed limits which reflect the UPPER END of safe travel speeds for the reasonable majority on our highways. I also demand that traffic offenses and corresponding fines to be justifiable.

A single excessive speeding ticket in British Columbia - which is not difficult for a driver to obtain in a speed transition zone - now costs $1,751 in fines and risk premiums alone, plus the costs of impoundment, plus increased insurance premiums.  Contrast this with the fine for the absolutely as dangerous running a red light or failing to yield for a pedestrian at $167.

These fines illustrate that the BC government has once again prioritized speeding as a cash cow and not safety of all road users as the underlying objective.

I want to drive freely and legally on our world-class highways, with full focus on the road. I refuse to drive in fear of arbitrary and random police enforcement, harsh penalties coupled with insurance rate hikes and, most of all feeling like a criminal while watching medians and shoulders for police rather than concentrating on the road.

The 85th percentile speed measuring and limit setting methodology, shows properly set speed limits encourage voluntary compliance and reduces the need for expensive and punitive enforcement.

Most importantly, proper speed limits minimize collisions, and therefore injuries and fatalities.
